With Ugly Divorce Finalized, Time For Harbaugh And The 49ers To Move On

Jim Harbaugh is no longer the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers. He will likely be suiting up in his department store khaki’s in Ann Arbor as the head man of the Michigan Wolverines when next year comes calling.

The situation that led to Harbaugh’s demise in San Francisco is one that can be read in the scripts handed to Hollywood producers on a daily basis.

A hard-headed coach that seems to be going 100 percent 100 percent of the time clashing with a front office that didn’t view him as someone who respected the hierarchy. A CEO in Jed York that refused to put ego aside in order to maintain a structure that had seen the 49ers earn three consecutive trips to the NFC Championship game.

Once the dust settled on a disappointing 8-8 campaign and before players even cleaned out their locker rooms, San Francisco had released a statement indicating that the two sides agreed to mutually part ways.

Despite multiple reports to the contrary, Harbaugh’s exit from the 49ers after four largely successful seasons had little to do with the players in the locker room or general manager Trent Baalke. It was a clash of egos between a young CEO in York and a head coach that simply didn’t want to be viewed as a pawn for the corporate machine that was residing in the offices at 4949 Centennial BLVD in Santa Clara, California.

That’s pretty much the extent of it.

Sure Baalke and Harbaugh clashed. Sure they didn’t agree on some player personnel decisions. Sure there were players on the roster that didn’t care too much for Harbaugh. Sure the former 49ers head coach wanted a nice raise. But all that could have been put aside for the betterment of the franchise and the product the 49ers were going to field moving forward.

At the end of the day, personalities clashed. Egos couldn’t handle one another. And honestly, the situation just wasn’t sustainable for any longer.

Now that San Francisco has to search for a new head coach, the franchise is going to be placed under the microscope during its search for Harbaugh’s replacement. The new head coach will be compared to a man that currently ranks fifth on the all-time list in terms of winning percentage (minimum 60 games coached).

Two internal candidates for the job are defensive line coach Jim Tomsula and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. Up until recently Fangio had not shown any interest in being a head coach in the NFL. With news that he has shown interest in the job and isn’t following Harbaugh to Michigan, that changes a lot from San Francisco’s perspective.

As it relates to Tomsula, he coached one game for the 49ers back in 2010 after Mike Singletary was fired. And for what it’s worth, San Francisco throttled the Arizona Cardinals 38-7 in that game. Tomsula has been with the 49ers since 2007 and would be a popular hire among the players. However, he doesn’t have any experience as a coordinator in the NFL. That could lead some to wonder whether he will be Mike Singletary 2.0.

Multiple reports on Monday indicated that San Francisco has requested permission to interview candidates outside of the organization, Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn and Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, among them. And for Quinn, it would be a reunion of sorts. He was the 49ers defensive line coach in 2003 and 2004.

Other potential candidates include Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase and Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator Todd Bowles.

Former Seattle Seahawks and Green Bay Packers head coach Mike Holmgren has also been mentioned as a possibility. He was the 49ers quarterbacks coach from 1986-1988 before being promoted to the team’s offensive coordinator in 1989. Holmgren is a member of the Bill Walsh coaching tree and could be enticing to a 49ers front office that still has links to that successful era.

With that said, the Super Bowl-winning head coach would have to take on a pure coaching role, especially with Baalke entrenched in as the head of the player personnel department. Holmgren has expressed interest in the job, but there is no indication that the feeling is mutual in Santa Clara.

Either way, the man who replaces Harbaugh as the team’s head coach in 2015 will be under a lot of pressure. San Francisco is coming off a down season, it’s first at Levi’s Stadium. A stadium that will be hosting Super Bowl 50 in February of 2016. Needless to say, the brass in Santa Clara would rather the home team play in that game.

This doesn’t even take into account the fact that Harbaugh’s success as the team’s head coach is nearly unprecedented for an organization that has been among the most successful in the history of the league. Despite not being able to win the big game, the culture of success that Harbaugh created in San Francisco cannot be overstated.

This culture may have started before Harbaugh took the reigns in 2011, but he extended it on to the football field for a team that had seen a decade’s worth of struggles prior to his arrival.
